Cheap canned good for SHTF prep, plus lot of great everyday stuff, cheap, even cheaper with the coupons. I just picked up 3 crank LED flashlights for $6.40 a piece.

Forget Duracell. Buy Energizer E2Lithium. Twice the price, seven times the power, and 10 to 15 year shelf life.

How about rechargeables? About a year ago I got a nice Rayovac NiMH charger and 4 AAs for $12, at Big Lots of course.

Agreed; the lithium batteries run much better cold temperatures also. I store nothing but.

"Big Lots" and "Emergency Preparations" DO NOT GO TOGETHER.

That's like choosing Life Insurance from the lowest cost "insurer" without regard for the "insurer's" stability and assets.

I bought some shit at Big Lots recently. One was a bottle of Clearly Canadian spring water...still in date...smelled like sewage when I opened it. Bought some Barbasol shaving cream, too...it's like water.

Yeah, and how were they stored? Are they recoveries from a fire or disaster? Were they in a warehouse for weeks or months at 110 degrees? If so, forget the expiration date on them.

No surprise those are at Big Lots.

I'd never recommend rechargeables for emergency lighting, for obvious reasons.

just got back with a mega load of canned, dry, and other nonperishable food. Got $30 off of $160, and prices were super cheap to begin with. Got a high end crock pot too for $16.

If I had a dedicated storage room and a pickup truck, I could have spent $500+...

Go get 'em guys...

It's worked flawlessly so far - digital camera, mp3 player, tv remote, etc.

For emergency lighting, go with crank flashlights.

Do you work for a Big Lots competitor?

Gee, Banjo... glad I left a little there for ya'! I was there yesterday afternoon, and loaded up on canned goods. Have you ever seen those 15 oz cans of Campbells Soup before? Awesome deal! Might go back later this week for more (unless you cleaned them out!)

LOL. I must have just missed you there at the store. I haven't seen those 15 oz cans before, but I did buy a few cream of mushrooms. There were a few other soup types that I'd never seen before too. Zesty Azteca meatball? Never heard of it before, but I'm game.
After looking into Biglots.com, I now know why there were all of those odd ball types of soups and other things. It's because they were trial items from a test market or discontinued items. (I'm kinda new to Biglots so I wasn't sure what their story was) Nothing wrong with that. There were Campbell's Chunky soups for $1.20/can. Compared to $2.70/can at Supervalu, that's a steal. Niblets for 40 cents/can,Good stuff!

I am planning on going back there again to make another haul at 20% off... I'll try to leave something for you, but I can't make any promises, lol.

Nice - thanks for pointing out this coupon. I went and picked up a bunch of household supplies on the cheap - dishsoap - towels - scrubbers ect and they had a buncha canned chili, sardines, spices and some small appliances I could use.

I got all good looking namebrand stuff all with 20010-11 expirations. Good stuff.

I strongly encourage anyone who is able to take advantage of this coupon.

I just spent two hours/$275 there. (saved $65). Bought a lot of electronics/tools. My favorite items were a hand crank 'storm radio', has all emergency channels and led light for $8. A hand crank (large) halogen/led spotlight for $15, small hand crank flashlights for $6. A nice bench grinder for $35. Picked up a mini-coleman refrigerator you plug into a car lighter socket for $16. (keeps a 6 pack cool)

Do you think these things will be cheaper in the future, if you can find at all?

Underwear, slippers, socks, tarps, power inverters, rechargeable battery etc. It's all made in china of course, so who cares where you buy it? They had a new 6000 btu a/c unit for $75. Nice air compressor for $100. A lot of stuff you could use in the future, good barter items too.

My store looked like no doomers went through it yet. Everyone was relaxed without a clue of what's going on in the world. Now is the time to stock up..

^^ I really didn't buy too much - spent about a hundred bucks and had a full cart - guy says to me " eh stocking up huh?" I was thinking - shit this isn't stocking up - only a cart full.

They didn't have any of the hand crank stuff in my area - was actually hoping to find a couple crank items.

When I went back the second time I had a cart full of mostly canned goods and the lady says to me "Are you stocking a fallout shelter or something?" I just laughed and said "It sure looks like it, doesn't it?" and then she had to explain to the younger cashier just what a fallout shelter was...

Thanks for the chuckle - sad that it had to be explained. In a few years the youngins will once again know about fallout shelters due to the financial weapons of mass destruction that are going off around the world.:s10::hissyfit_m::realmad:

The big lots I go to in Salinas is nothing like yours , crappy hand tools , some candy isles an isle of soft & energy drinks an isle of cereals.....you get the picture.

I did manage to spend $114.00 though......thanks for the tip TA :yippee:

I think I might print out another coupon for some :spam4: ...they have crappy canned ham to, I think the brand name is Royal

I spent less than $100 but managed to load up on cereals, canned foods, soaps, housewares, and a second batch of Halloween candy. I ate the first batch of candy I bought already during the market meltdowns this week. :puke:

I was looking at that ham too, but then thought I remembered that name in association with one of the recalls this summer. I think I was mistaken though...didn't come up on the google search. I may have to go back too.

I'm really, really sad and disappointed to see people worship "that store."

Unless you're buying toilet paper or some other ruggedly-unperishable items, you gamble with your health or life depending on shit from Big Lots.

Expiration dates are bullshit when it's on a food item at Big Lots. Might still be good. MIGHT NOT.

I learned from personal experience, and feel compelled to share.

But your food and other emergency preparations from a REAL store than stocks FRESH products.

Can you elaborate on that? Why is a canned item no good when it's got years left on the date? I haven't actually eaten much yet from Biglots, but I did just buy a bunch of canned goods so I'm concerned about what you're saying here.

SOME of the products at Big Lots are fine, being from overstock or closure of a retailer.

However, some of it is NOT fine. Ask yourself: "where does Big Lots get all of this?"

In many cases, it's "salvage" merchandise.

Food from Big Lots is a pure gamble. If it was stored properly, then the expiration date can be trusted.

If it was NOT stored properly, such as in a very hot warehouse, the expiration dates no longer apply, since the "improper handling" negates the projection of duration of quality.

About 1/3 of the food items you get at Big Lots will be fine, wholesome and appetizing. Another 1/3 will be "off quality," tasting "funny" or otherwise not up to par, but probably not dangerous. The last 1/3 will be Russian roulette with a belly ache or worse.

I really don't understand why anyone would want to purchase emergency preparedness supplies at Big Lots. If it's at Big Lots, it means "no one else wanted it" (to sell it).

If you buy life insurance, do you go to a long-standing company with huge assets and decades of success? (AIG notwithstanding) OR...do you go to Scheisskopf & Schlecht Discount Assurance Company, and sign up for a policy, paying good money for an "insurance product" few if anyone else wanted?

Big Lots simply doesn't present cost-effectiveness and value superior to reliable discount grocers, like Food4Less, FoodMaxx, Winco, Cub, or East Coast & South equivalents.

:confused_ma:

Where are you getting these percentages?

I scoured the internet and did not run across and opinions comparable to yours. I did find one complaint that there is expired cans mixed in with others from time to time. That is a buyer beware type situation. If what you are saying was to be true Big Lots would not exist except as a bankrupted entity buried in lawsuits.

No, it means that Big Lots was the high bidder on merchandise that didn't fit into another company's distribution or retail plans. In no way does it mean that the goods are inferior or defective.

If Proctor and Gamble has a contract to deliver 1 million bars of soap to Walmart, it might make sense (economy of scale, etc) for them to manufacture a total of 1.5 million bars instead. Big Lots buys the remainder.

Yes, some food items only have a few months left before expiration. Fine, consume those quickly. But there are plenty of goods with 2010 dates.

Pun intended, but the Goobermint-mandated expiration dating standards are a whole 'nother "can of worms."

I call BS on the Big Lots bashing. Now, I am not over there buying the off brand, strange and never been heard of type of food before - but I've eaten veggies, pasta, chili and other stuff from there - no issues.

There are many things you can get there besides food - paper towels - toothbrushes and other toiletries. Hell, spices lots and lots of spices.

MOST of the stuff I see here is by brands that might not have take off - some of the food items were of brands not from the area of the country I am in.

If you don't like big lots - fine- we heard you - now you can stop bashing the place over and over in this thread without any real examples. thanks.

I did save some for you. I made a nice haul, but left plenty of stuff for you as well with only one exception. They have this vadalia onion/peach flavored hot sauce that I bought to try and it is awesome. I liked it so much that my wife is going to stop by there today and buy up the rest of them! I've always loved hot sauces and for $1.04/bottle you can't go wrong on that one. Something like that would easily be in the $5-6+ range in a more gourmet setting.
Other than that, it's all yours. :s1:

No shit. I'm looking closer at this crank spotlight I picked up there last night. It has a sealed 6V lead acid battery, 8 leds/1 halogen bulb with the crank generator on back. Comes with AC charger and 12V cigarette lighter charge connection. Cost? $15.50.

Hey maybe the dude got a can of bad beans there one day, but why piss on a good thread?

Or this Coleman electrostatic mini-fridge I picked up for $16? This will be a major luxury item in the future, I have little doubt...

I've experienced rolling blackouts. There is no way we will avoid major disruptions in our infrastructures. Shiiite, our infrastructure is falling apart during good times.

Went back and bought another $100 worth for my pops since he doesn't have the gumption to do it for himself. I put it on the gold card :ok:

I just got back from Big Lots. They had the 7 ounce semi dry pouches of Starkist tuna that cost like $1.80 at Wal-Mart for $1.20 each before the 20% discount. I ended up getting them for .96 cents each. I bought 50 and am thinking I should have bought more. They probably still had another 50 to 75 in stock when I left. They have late 2010 expiration dates. I also got 4 bottles of some oriental hot chilli sauce that I like and various toiletries. I looked for one of those hand crank radios, but couldn't find one at my local store. Maybe I got there too late for those.

I bought a hand crank LED flashlight for $9.60 after discount...not sure if that's a good deal. I also bought some 28-29oz cans of tomatoes and beans for 80c each (about half price compared to the grocery store) and some 7oz mexican noodle packets for 26c each (half the price of the cheapest spaghetti available at the grocery store).

Thanks for the headsup, was worth the trip.

Sure did! That reminds me, I need to plug it in and make sure it works. All that stuff from China is questionable until you actually plug it in.. Already had to return one crank flashlight, didn't work.

Thanks for letting everyone know about the coupon. I was not able to use it but glad others could. Kept getting certificate error when clicking on the coupon. Looks like many did well. How often do they offer 20% coupons anyone know?

I talked to the woman at the checkout. She told me that this is a new program and that she thinks it will be every couple of months. We will see.

That would be nice. I wouldn't mind rummaging thru Big Lots every couple of months for 20% off. That would be a good opportunity to re-stock things and search for bargains.

There was one just like this a few months ago. I may be mistaken, but I seem to remember that one being 30%...
